Tony's first memory of wine was at the family dinner table. For holidays and special occasions, his little shotglass had an ounce of wine in it. He was participating in a ritual that goes back 2000 years. It was the Romans who democratized wine and made it the centerpiece of a family meal.
Growing up in an Italian immigrant household, wine and family shared the same celebration and scenery. Perhaps Tony's love of wine was planted in those early years.
His grandfather (nonno) Giulio owned a small vineyard in the Molise region of Southern Italy. Tony remembers his grandfather with his gallon jug of red wine under the table. The joke was that Giulio would hide his wine so Tony's grandmother (nonna) Margherita couldn't see how much he was drinking.
Tony's father Elio, a young Italian immigrant purchased a liquor store in the 1980's. So Tony grew up watching his father selling wine, beer, and spirits in Wilmington, Delaware.
In 2000 Tony's Italian grandmother unexpectedly passed away. It was her dying wish that her grandchildren would visit her little village of Montaquila in Molise.
Sadly, she didn't get to go on that trip, but Tony's entire family went to her hometown to connect with his aunts, uncles, and cousins. He fell in love with the family, the language, the food, the wine, and culture. He would return to Italy every summer to visit family and explore the country. He learned Italian in the kitchen of his Aunt (Zia) Annunziata. She didn't speak a word of English so Tony was forced to learn Italian.
On those trips he travelled from the North to the South of Italy to see the sights and experience the local cuisines and wines.
He was having the most amazing food and wine experiences of his life. But when he returned to his apartment in New York City, the Italian wines in the local liquor stores were disappointing.
It didn't matter how much money he spent, the Italian wines available in the US weren't as good as the local wines in Italy.
Many years would pass by until one day Tony had the idea to bring those amazing local wines from Italy, and make them available to Italian wine lovers all across the United States. He called them "artisan wines" because of the origin, craftmanship, and culture behind them—the total opposite of mass-produced wines.
He founded Gladiator Wine Distribution, an importer and distributor of artisan wines from Italy in 2013. Tony views his portfolio, not simply as a catalog of wine products for sale. Instead he sees the Gladiator Portfolio as his own personal collection of small batch Italian wines.
Each wine is carefully selected according to Tony's proprietary criteria. His algorythm is made up of dozens of parameters which are both objective and subjective.
Most importantly, Tony's mission is to bring to life the finest artisan wines through story and celebration. That way, your table will be filled with your own rich moments and memories.
